Just a quick heads up that I’ve decided to transfer my domain name registrar for sylverant.net to Namecheap (instead of Go Daddy). While I don’t suspect this will cause any issues, I just wanted to make people aware in case there is any downtime because of it. I believe I’ve taken all appropriate precautions to prevent any downtime, but I obviously cannot guarantee it. If anyone cares to know my reasoning, feel free to read the rest of the post after the fold.
So, if you’ve gotten here, you may actually be wondering why I would switch my domain registrar out of the blue like this. Well, I found out today that Go Daddy was in support of the Stop Online Piracy Act (or SOPA). If you haven’t read up on what SOPA is, or why its so bad, do a quick google search and find out for yourself. Simply put, it is an act that basically threatens to give the government the ability to implement DNS filtering throughout the country, stifling free speech and having various other disastrous effects. Many large technology companies have said that SOPA (or the equally bad Protect-IP act) is not the right way to combat piracy and would threaten to undermine the entire premise of a free and open Internet.
I encourage any US Citizens reading this to contact your Representatives and Senators if you have not done so (and even if you have) and urge them to oppose these disastrous bills. While it may not help in the end, it certainly can’t hurt.
Anyway, that’s enough of a rant for now, I guess.
